Scr Fault — Posibles Códigos de Falla

Se encontraron 2 código(s) de falla asociado(s) con scr fault. Los códigos están ordenados por severidad — revise primero los códigos DETENER MOTOR.

What Does an SCR Fault Mean?

An SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) fault is a specific diagnostic trouble code indicating that one or more components in the DEF-based NOx reduction system are operating outside their expected parameters. Unlike a generic "SCR malfunction" code, an SCR fault typically points to a specific component-level failure — most commonly a NOx sensor circuit fault (SPN 4342 FMI 4) or an SCR inlet temperature sensor fault (SPN 3556 FMI 5). The ECM has detected a voltage, signal, or performance issue that requires component-level diagnosis rather than system-level troubleshooting.

SCR faults fall into two categories: electrical faults (open circuit, short to ground, short to power) and performance faults (reading out of range, response time too slow, conversion efficiency below threshold). Electrical faults typically require sensor or wiring replacement, while performance faults often indicate an underlying issue with the DEF system or catalyst that affects the sensor's reading.

Common Causes of SCR Faults

Can You Keep Driving With an SCR Fault?

Most SCR fault codes are CHECK SOON severity, meaning the truck can continue operating — but only for a limited time. The EPA mandates that any active SCR fault must trigger a progressive derate within 20–50 miles of detection. The sequence:

  1. Initial SCR fault code logged — Drivability is unaffected. You have a brief window to diagnose.
  2. 25% torque derate (typically within 20 miles) — Reduced power, slower acceleration. Top speed may be limited to 60 mph.
  3. 50% torque derate (typically within 30 miles) — Significant power loss. Top speed limited to 25–40 mph.
  4. 5 mph speed limiter (SPN 4364 FMI 18) — The truck can only limp to a safe pullover location.

Do not attempt to clear the code and continue driving — the derate will return within minutes. The root cause must be repaired before the ECM will allow full operation.

How to Fix an SCR Fault

  1. Read the specific SPN/FMI code — Different FMI values indicate different failures: FMI 3 = voltage above normal, FMI 4 = voltage below normal, FMI 5 = current below normal (open circuit), FMI 9 = abnormal update rate, FMI 13 = out of calibration, FMI 31 = condition exists.
  2. Perform visual inspection of the harness — Trace the wiring from the affected sensor to the ECM. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires near exhaust components, or corroded connectors.
  3. Check sensor resistance and voltage — Use a digital multimeter to verify sensor readings match OEM specifications. A NOx sensor should read 2.4–2.6V at idle with the key on, engine off.
  4. Test the 5V reference and sensor ground — A failed 5V reference will cause multiple sensor faults simultaneously. Check between the 5V ref pin and sensor ground pin at the affected sensor connector.
  5. Replace the faulty sensor or harness — Use only OEM sensors. Aftermarket NOx sensors often have incorrect calibrations that cause recurring faults.
  6. Clear codes and road test — Verify the fault does not return after 20+ miles of driving. If it returns, suspect ECM driver circuit failure.
