An SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) malfunction indicates that the aftertreatment system responsible for reducing NOx emissions is not operating within EPA-mandated parameters. The SCR system injects DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) into the exhaust stream, where it reacts with NOx over a catalyst to produce harmless nitrogen and water. When the ECM detects that conversion efficiency has dropped below the certified threshold — typically 70–95% depending on engine calibration — it logs an SCR malfunction code and triggers a progressive derate sequence.

SCR malfunction codes are not just emissions issues — they are legally mandated safety inducements. The EPA requires all 2010+ heavy-duty diesel engines to enter a 25% torque derate, then a 50% derate, and finally a 5 mph speed limiter if SCR faults are not corrected. How to Fix an SCR Malfunction

  1. Scan with OEM diagnostic tool — Cummins INSITE, Detroit DDDL, Volvo Tech Tool, or PACCAR ESA. Generic OBD-II scanners cannot read OEM-specific SPN 520605 or 520210 codes.
  2. Verify DEF quality — Use a refractometer to confirm 32.5% urea concentration. If contaminated, drain and flush the DEF tank.
  3. Check NOx sensor readings at idle — Inlet NOx should read 150–250 ppm, outlet 30–60 ppm (20–40% of inlet). Out-of-spec readings indicate sensor drift.
  4. Inspect DEF doser for crystallization — Remove the dosing injector and inspect for white crystals. Clean with deionized water or replace if severely plugged.
