Def Warning — Posibles Códigos de Falla

Se encontraron 9 código(s) de falla asociado(s) con def warning. Los códigos están ordenados por severidad — revise primero los códigos DETENER MOTOR.

What Does the DEF Warning Light Mean?

The DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) warning light illuminates whenever the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system detects a condition that prevents proper NOx reduction. This warning is not a suggestion — the EPA mandates that all 2010+ heavy-duty diesel trucks must enter a progressive derate if DEF-related faults are not addressed within a specific driving distance (typically 20–50 miles). A solid amber DEF light usually means low fluid level or suspect DEF quality, while a flashing amber light indicates a critical fault that will trigger a 5 mph speed limiter if ignored.

Common Causes of DEF Warning Lights

Can You Keep Driving With a DEF Warning?

Initially yes, but with strict limits. The EPA-mandated inducement sequence works as follows:

  1. Solid amber DEF light: Continue driving, but top off DEF within 200 miles.
  2. Flashing amber DEF light + Check Engine Light: A partial derate is active (typically 25% torque reduction). You have 20–50 miles to reach a service location.
  3. Flashing red STOP ENGINE light + DEF light: The 5 mph inducement is now active. You can only limp to a safe pullover location.
  4. Continued operation after 5 mph inducement: ECM lockout may occur, requiring a dealer reset with proprietary software.

Never ignore a DEF warning past the flashing amber stage — the cost of roadside DEF system service ($150–$400) is far less than a tow bill ($500–$2,000) plus the 5 mph derate downtime.

How to Fix a DEF Warning Light

  1. Check DEF level first — A surprising number of DEF warnings are simply low fluid. Top off with fresh API-certified DEF.
  2. Test DEF quality with a refractometer — A $30 refractometer verifies 32.5% urea concentration. If contaminated, drain and flush the tank.
  3. Scan for fault codes — Use Cummins INSITE, DDDL, Volvo Tech Tool, or PACCAR ESA. SPN 4364, 4334, 3259, and 3031 each point to different root causes.
  4. Inspect the DEF doser for crystallization — White crystals at the dosing injector require removal and cleaning with deionized water. Replace if severely plugged.
  5. Check DEF tank heater fuse — Especially in winter. A 15A or 20A fuse in the battery box powers the DEF tank heater.
  6. Perform DEF system reset after repairs — Clear codes, prime the DEF pump, run a forced DPF regen, and road test 20–50 miles to verify SCR efficiency.

For step-by-step reset procedures, see our DEF system troubleshooting guide. Most DEF warning issues can be resolved for under $400 if caught early — waiting until the 5 mph derate typically raises repair costs to $1,500–$3,000.
